Every month, those of us with periods expose our bodies to toxic chemicals, and have to bin or flush plastic due to the unhealthy disposable menstrual products we are sold. This is not helped by a lack of impartial education and the taboos that exist around periods.
An estimated 26,903 tonnes of waste from disposable period products is generated a year. This ends up in landfill or in our sewage system and sadly very often in our rivers and seas. Conventional disposable period products can contain plastic, fragrance and even endocrine-disrupting chemicals – not good for the environment or our health.
Isn’t it about time we had a Menstrual, Health, Dignity and Sustainability Action Plan? The Environmenstrual campaign will be focussing on what this could look like and calling on governments to take action.
Buying plastic-free period products doesn’t need to empty your pocket! Find out more here.
